WALKING FOOTBALL TEAM FINISH RUNNERS UP IN GLASGOW CHALLENGE CUP
Dundee United Community Trusts Walking Football Team finished runners up in the Glasgow Challenge Cup, held at Toryglen Football Centre on 10 October 2022.
The tournament saw a slight change in format, with 7-a-sides being tested along with the games being non-contact. The tournament saw 16 teams being entered across four groups, with 1st and 2nd of each group going into a knockout competition for the Glasgow Cup, and 3rd and 4th of each group going into a knockout competition for the Glasgow Challenge Cup.
DUCT were drawn in a group with Pollok B, Ayr United and Saint Anthonys, the 2021 Glasgow Cup winners.
The first match saw DUCT run out 3-0 winners against Pollok B, with goals from Jimmie McIntosh and a double from Andy Ellwood. With no break between our first and second matches, we then faced Ayr United in what turned out to be an extremely close match. Ayr United narrowly won 2-1 with our goal coming from Derek Brough. The final group game saw us face the cup holders - Saint Anthonys. The Saints took the lead however DUCT came back with goals from Mark Deveraux and Andy Ellwood, however the team came up short and lost 3-2. Saint Anthonys would progress from our group and go on to retain the Glasgow Cup.
Goals from Mark Deveraux and Andy Ellwood saw us draw 2-2 with Stenhousemuir in the quarter finals, before winning 5-4 on penalties thanks to a fantastic save by our ‘keeper. A solid 1-0 victory against Whittlet in the semi final thanks to another goal from Andy Ellwood saw us progress to the final.
We faced Drumchapel in the final. It was to be another extremely close game. DUCT took the lead through Andy Ellwoods sixth goal of the day however Drumchapel soon equalised. Our pressure up front paid off and we took the lead again thanks to Mark Devereauxs third strike of the day. It looked like DUCT would go on to win the match however Drumchapel equalised late on and the match ended 2-2. Penalties would decide the winner of the 2022 Glasgow Challenge Cup. Both teams scored their first 4 penalties however DUCT hit the post with their fifth penalty and Drumchapel made no mistake with their last penalty.
Finishing runners up in the Glasgow Challenge Cup is a fantastic step forward for our Walking Football Team. Well done to the team for their continued effort and hard work.
